Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
